Q&As

Why did you choose to study in Madrid?

I chose to study in Madrid because of the uniquely immersive experience that it offers, namely through the homestay and the language pledge. As a Linguistics major, I firmly believe that there is no better way to learn a language and culture than to live it: through the food you eat, the people you meet, and your daily adventures on the street!

How did studying away support your academic growth?

Studying away helped me take a step back from my fast-paced lifestyle at Stanford and reflect deeply on what I want to do after graduation. In Madrid, I was able to solidify my academic goals and recharge my academic battery in preparation for my final year on The Farm!

What did you learn about yourself during your study away experience, especially through any challenges or major cultural adjustments?

Studying abroad taught me that I tend to "bite off more than I can chew" when I travel and that it's really important to pace yourself. In the early weeks of my time in Madrid, I tried to fill every second of my free time with activities in the city, but would end up feeling extremely tired the next day. You will get more out of your experience if you take your cultural exploration in moderation!

Briefly describe a typical day and your favorite part of daily life in your program location.

My days in Madrid began with me riding the Metro into the district of Chamberí, where I would attend a flamenco dance class to wake me up and get me ready for the morning. I then had classes at the Instituto Internacional until the early afternoon and came back to my apartment for a 2:30pm lunch. After more classes in the afternoon until 5:30pm, I would explore the city until around 9pm, at which point I returned home to have a 9:30pm dinner with my host family, do homework, and prepare for the next day!

If applicable, how did participating in an internship, volunteership or experiential-based project help you grow professionally? What specific skills did you gain?

Interning at Smile and Learn, a language-learning company in Madrid, was among the most valuable experiences I had during my time abroad. Above all, I found it extremely helpful to observe the inherent differences that exist between Spanish and American work culture. In my time as an intern, I became a better listener, a more effective communicator, and a much better problem solver, which are all skills that will help me far into the future.

What was the most essential item you took with you on the program?

It wasn't always stylish, but my fanny pack!

What advice would you give students who are considering studying away?

Actively seek out situations that stretch you beyond your comfort zone! The ability to study abroad is an immense privilege, and the more you take advantage of the rich culture that surrounds you, the more you will learn and grow from your experience.
